Characters: Aemond Targaryen, Inara Maegyr (Original female character) in a Modern HOTD AU

Warnings : FICTIONAL PLOTLINE. Established relationship. Me swooning over Aemond Targaryen and writing this🤭 Inara being a sweet and awesome girl.

Note: This post and that a mutual of mine (@/elegantsplendour) remarked that this fic series has 'Succession' vibes. I wasn't aware of the show when I wrote this last year, and I still haven't watched it. Any resemblance to its plot is purely coincidental. Everything that is going to be re-posted here, comes from my delulu mind.

Inara's thoughts and a little background about her are in italics.

"You know me, mom, I can't just start working in some random hospital as a junior doctor," Inara spoke to her mother on phone, cradling it between her ear and shoulder as she watered her kitchen plants on a Saturday afternoon, “I am trying to find a job where I can practice both medicine and my art.”

"Where on earth will you find such a job, Inara?" Her mom questioned disapprovingly. "You will soon be a licensed doctor and able to practice medicine. You should start with a clinician job and save up for your MD tuition."

"Let me at least try, Mum. Maybe I can join some makeup manufacturing labs or intern with those big-shot skincare providers."

Inara heard her mom sigh and tut in response to her plans, a reaction she was quite used to by now. Yet, the conviction in her voice didn't falter as she continued, "I will definitely enroll in an MD program. Don't worry.”

As long as Inara could remember, she had always loved makeup. Even as a child, she would rummage through her mom's makeup kits and spend hours in front of the mirror, painting her own face and sometimes her mother's.

Her parents always wished to see her in the white coat of a doctor - a dream she shared with them. Cracking the medical entrance exams straight out of high school was a cakewalk, her sharp intellect paving the way for her.

Despite plenty of medical schools in Essos, the allure of studying abroad was too strong and liberating. The prestige of the renowned Citadel Medical School in Westeros had captured her attention long ago, and securing a seat there felt like destiny fulfilled.

While medical school required her to focus entirely on classes and books, her creative side yearned for exploration. Her love for makeup never faded, and after dedicating half her life to studying, she decided to follow her heart. A heart that always danced between two worlds, two passions, yearning to embrace both simultaneously.

As soon as she adjusted to her new life on a foreign land, she enrolled into a weekend certification course near her medical school. And, thus began her journey towards becoming a rare combination of a licensed medical practitioner and a trained makeup artist.

Days blurred into nights as she balanced the demands of medical studies with the pursuit of her passion.

Six years flew by in a whirlwind of learning and she was now nearing the end of her curriculum. After the sixth and last month of her hospital training and formal graduation, she would be a licensed medical practitioner. Thanks to her dedication to both medicine and makeup, she now stood as a certified makeup artist, with an expertise in skin care and prosthetics.

After freelancing a bridal makeup assignment a couple of months ago, she decided to take a detour from a predictable route towards advanced degrees or clinical positions straight after college. She planned to give herself a year of exploration into other career options before enrolling into an MD in Dermatology. And so she made up her mind on freelancing or finding a job that could extend her stay in Westeros, thereby allowing her to save up for her MD.

"Anyway, you've been so busy with everything else, you haven't even thought about finding someone. You're not getting any younger!" Her mom steered the course of the conversation to the topic she dreaded the most.

Oh boy, here it comes!

The inevitable discussion about her biological clock and society's expectations for single women was about to begin.

"Mom, please, I'm twenty four, not forty four!"

"Yes, and about time you started thinking of settling down!"

Rolling her eyes, Inara let out a sharp sigh.

"I have chores to do, mum. I gotta go," she cut the conversation short, trying her best to hide her rising impatience, “Bye! Love you!”

"Fine, But please think about what I said. Love you. ”

After ending the call, Inara continued staring at her phone's home screen. Smiling faces of her family stared back.

Her mom’s words still lingered in her mind, as she made herself a cup of chamomile tea and settled herself infront of her laptop.

She sipped her tea, smiling and recalling her mom's statement about doing tons of different things at a time. She had always loved to hustle. And, she loved how chimeric her career goals were. It wasn't an easy road, but she was determined to make it work somehow. Career satisfaction had always been her first priority; finding someone to date or marry, wasn't.

Inara's attention snapped back to her laptop screen, her eyes widening as she noticed the fourth and fifth unread emails from the top. Both arrived around the same time from the job search website she had signed up for.

The subject of the first email read:

Requirement of an assistant make-up artist on an upcoming TV Show.

The second one read:

Requirement of a physician / medical officer(s) on a TV production.

Universe works in the strangest of ways. All you have to do is ask.

She quickly opened both emails in separate tabs. They were from the human resources department of a television production house in King’s Landing. A period drama based on mythological history was in pre-production, and the HR team was hiring people on contract basis.

As someone who rarely watched television,or movies, she chuckled at the thought of working on a TV production house. Nevertheless, she decided to give it a try. With a few quick clicks, she accessed the links for both the positions and uploaded her resume. As she crafted cover letters for each position, wishful thoughts surfaced again. She let out another exhilarating chuckle, as a wave of nervous excitement crawled down her spine.

How fun and cool it would be, if I could somehow do both the jobs simultaneously.

A week later, as Inara was on her way home from the hospital where she interned, her phone rang. Seeing a number with the King’s Landing code, she gasped.

With her heart alight with anticipation, she answered the call. Clearing her throat, she adopted her sweetest and most professional tone before greeting the caller.

"Hi, Dr. Maegyr, this is Stannis calling from the HR department at Red Keep Productions. We've shortlisted your resume for the opening we posted about. Will you be available for an interview next week?"

"Hello, Mr. Stannis. Sure, I...I will be available!" She tried her best to mask the excitement in her voice. "Uh, I applied for two positions. May I know which one I have been shortlisted for?"

"Dr. Maegyr, your profile is one of the most interesting we've received so far. You have been called to interview for both positions. I can't say with certainty right now if you'll be hired for one or both roles as that will be decided based on your performance in the interviews." She could sense his smile through the phone.

"Thank you," she mouthed, looking up, her amber eyes sparkling with gratitude.

To be fair Daenerys does not ever say dragons plant no trees in the books. Twice she says she wants to plant trees and she has a hallucination of Jorah telling her dragons plant no trees. That said we missed out on a lot of good sass and passion and spark that’s present in book Daenerys. Emilia seems like she’s always holding something back. I don’t think she ever feels like a teenager. Which is fair because she was like 24 while filming season 1. I feel the same way about Kit like that is a grown man right from season 1. He was also like 24 and it’s true that some mid-20s can pull off teenagers (I’m one of them; I’m newly 26 and still get mistaken for being under 18), I don’t think Kit, Alfie, Emilia, or Richard can. Not just based on how they look either they all have a maturity to them. Alfie less so, he does impulsive teen pretty well and his crazed rant culminating in him getting whacked on the head by his own men is one of my favorite additions to the shows.

The biggest crime wrt age is honestly the fact that Daemon and Viserys are like 24 and 26 in the books being played by men in their 40s and 50s. I was 24 while watching hotd season 1 and the idea that Matt Smith was of age with me had me in fits

Oh yeah but that's part of hte problem, like I said, that Dany is a very introspective character. They tried to kind of turn Theon's thoughts into dialogue by having Sansa say his "If I die let me die as myself" line, so it can be done and I think considering how much that line, and others like it, echo in her head, it's important to include them. I mean, her whole vision sequence when she's losing Rhaego, the way she sees Rhaegar's face and hears "the last the last" in her head, all of that should have been translated onto the screen in some aspect too. Because yeah, Dany is witty, and funny, and snarky, and thinks through her even thought a hundred times over, but it's mostly in her head, and they don't even really try to adapt that into her dialogue which is annoying because it cuts out half her character.

And yeah, the only like "adults playing teens" that actually did seem like a teen was Jack Gleeson (I believe he was 19 when they started filming), everyone else looked absolutely grown despite playing like 18-19 year olds who just Do Not Look Like Adults yet. I think Richard and Emilia were kinda the worst when it came to that - Richard just doesn't look like a fucking 19 year old in the slightest and it makes Robb look just soooo fucking stupid in season 2 and season 3, especially when he refuses to forgive Catelyn despite Robb forgiving Catelyn in the books for releasing Jaime.

And yeah, HOTD is just so unserious about all the ages it drives me crazy. Ewan does not look like a teenager to me. Ryan and Fabien just don't age at all in like fifteen years even though like, they definitely should have. I've seen the point raised and I think it's a great point, that a lot of people would have received Alicent and Viserys much less negatively if Paddy looked as young and fit and handsome as he actually was when he was in his 30s like Viserys is and that's honestly just factually true because look at the reception to the show version of Dany and Drogo despite them making Drogo's rape of Dany like waaaay more obvious. And I'm not saying it's inherently a bad thing that they were trying to really emphasize the age gap here especially considering how many people still don't get that Alicent was a victim of spousal rape but I also think it plays into this idea that like, an abuser always looks like an abuser, is always some dirty old man, and not like, a handsome healthy 30 year old who prefers to fuck 16 year olds because 16 year old girls don't argue back the way 30 year old women do.

If Aegon I really did prophecise the return of the Others (as HOTD claims), shouldn't he have tried to reform Westeros' military structure to prepare? A standing army might be too difficult to keep fed in a world with variable winters. However, in some medieval themed stories I've read there have been kingdoms with a "central band" that is always active, and is augmented by levies when a war actually occurs. Also, in your response to my last question you mentioned the possibility of making those eligible for military service train for a certain number of days every year.

I did mention that, but I also mentions that such a provision, even for a kingdom not as ridiculously huge as Westeros, would be laughably unenforceable. Even countries with greater bureaucratic organization, like Rome or Byzantium, struggled with mobilization and readiness - time spent doing drill is time not spent having a living. In later eras, governments tried all sorts of carrots and sticks to make sure there was at least some levels of training: everything from fines for people who did keep their kit in good order such as in the Asize of Arms to the Anglo-Saxon fyrdsmen being trained by the regions to act as a first line against raiding Vikings to militiamen getting free food and beer to show up for drill day in the Thirteen Colonies. Enforcement for these provisions was typically done at the local level simply because having a national-level system for doing so was simply not feasible. You could have a smaller organization have regular training, such as town watches which might be able to organize with the help of city-wide entities like burghers and guilds. So while that would be very smart, it is likely beyond Aegon's capacity.

There is an entity that can act like this, and in fact, is supposed to act like this: The Night's Watch. Regular tithes and donations to the Watch to help support cashflow problems that early armies would struggle with (hence why mercenary companies frequently turned brigand when there were no wars to sign up for), but it's simply not sufficient without regular payment. If Aegon wanted to support this in a way that was much more politically feasible - he'd mandate a percentage of taxes taken in be sent to the Night's Watch, or possible tax forgiveness up to a certain amount for donations to the Watch. This is a little bit easier to manage, as tax assessments could be made a little more regularly than unit inspections of far-flung regions and the Night's Watch can easily record donations received to help simplify the accounting process.

The fact that this isn't done, and that Aegon is smart enough to know this, is yet another indication that this "plot twist" is not integrated very well in the story. As I've said in the past, it feels like poorly-executed, tacked-on nonsense and significantly hurts Aegon's characterization, introducing a bunch of plot holes while addressing only one rather insignificant question regarding Aegon (why conquer Westeros?) that wasn't even all that important to begin with.

My fam were watching hotd and I literally had a heart attack when I walked past the TV to see Kit Harrington on screen with medieval looking clothes on, only to realise they changed channels while I was gone.

But if they weren't so focused on the Targaryens I think the show would absolutely milk the fangasm train by having former GoT actors reappear as random side characters for no other reason than for fandom points. Thats how little faith I have in this show, I was convinced they did that for like...3 secs. The only thing stopping them is probably the actors themselves.

The funniest one I've heard was that when they show the Stark bannermen, they should cut to the Boltons for no other reason then to have Roose Bolton standing in the crowd just to appease the joke theory that the Boltons are actually vampires and that's why they're like that. Like at this point, it would at the bare minimum, get a nose exhale out of me. That's how low the bar is. Just give me something that doesn't make me want to throw myself down a well. It would be extremely stupid, but at least like, it'd be so dumb it's funny, instead of it's so dumb it makes me start drooling as I lose brain cells.

I didn't even care about the final Alicent scene. I was so numb at that point I literally couldn't care less about what was going on. I just desperatly wanted the episode to end, and then it took like five full fucking minutes to end because it did a riduclous Lord of the Rings style grandiose montage like everyone's fucking preparing for Helm's Deep, but like, stupid.

The final emotion I had was when I had to hear Daemon say "Winter is Coming" in fucking High Valyrian. And at that moment a friend messaged me asking how the finale was going, and instead of having a real reaction, I just without any words sent him that clip from the office of Michael Scott yelling:

And then proceeded to watch the rest of the episode in complete fucking blank stared silence.

That's how numb I am at this point. At least season 7 still makes me angry. Season 7 is so bad that I still find new things to bitch about, this season just has me laying face down on the floor because at this point that's more fun then any of this slog of a show.

But I've wasted this much of my time watching all of it already, so I am unforchunately locked into letting this show give me permanent brain damage.

In HOTD the “prequel” episodes should’ve been confined to 3 instead of 5 and those 2 episodes should’ve been spent with the green kids, specifically Aegon (older Aegon).

He’s our 2nd main character and we know NOTHING about him going into S2 and the main action other then he’s a r***st and a pos.

All his canon character traits like going to flea bottom, alcoholism, whoring, being a sex addict and a libertine, being depressed over his inheritance etc are all either just implied, hinted to or viewers heard from the books or actor interviews. For most of us it’s the books. If you only watched the show you know nada.

On the other hand we spent SO MUCH TIME with Daemon. We saw what he casually gets up to, kinda a view his daily life, we got to know him in what I even think was too much screen time. He’s an important character but not a main character so the most time should’ve been spent on rhaenyra (5+ episodes of focus) and Aegon (10 minutes max of screen time and in 90% of that we just see him and don’t get to know him at all or it’s already the main action)

We also spent so much time with Leanor who hardly has any significance in the Dance or later events.

We spent so much time on the Stepstones debacle even tho it has little to no contribution to the main plot other then one mention of the triarchy during the dance. The stepstones plot was done imo as a way to flesh out Daemon’s character and Daemon and viserys’s relationship.

But am I wrong when I say “was that really that important and crucial to take up 5 episodes?”

Look how unfair and unbalanced the info we have on rhaenyra vs Aegon is. We see rhaenyra grow up, we see an hour long well rounded view into her life, hardships, conflicts, friendships, etc that shape her into who she will be as a character and her behavior in the later action. By the time we see her in episode 8 and the real action begins she’s a character we’re already familiar with.

Instead we could’ve gotten a good 2 episodes looking into the daily lives of the green kids at the Keep. We could’ve seen Aegon in flea bottom, wandering drunk around the keep, being dragged out of brothels, partying, sneaking out at night, creeping around serving girls in a book canon way, slacking off training and lessons, bonding with or riding Sunfyre, his relationship with his siblings and family outside of only showing us the conflict parts

The whole thing with Daemon stems from “famous actor syndrome” meaning that if an actor less well known than Matt Smith was playing Daemon we wouldn’t be spending as much time with him.

GOT had Sean Bean, I was looking into the promo for GOT season 1 and it was only Sean Bean. GOT firstly attracted viewers because of him.

Kit Harrington and Sophie Turner talked about how all of the actors had to learn Sean Bean’s northern accent because Sean Bean couldn’t do RP.

I think the same could be applied to Matt Smith, without a shadow of a doubt he is the most famous actor in HoTD, and neither him or his fans would like to have him in the sidelines.

In regards to Rhaenyra, regardless of my feelings of the character, making her the protagonist was a mistake. She doesn’t survive the whole Dance, and her death occurs way too late to be like Ned Stark dying in season 1, so we would shift focus to other characters.

Alicent survives the whole Dance, her character is one of the most important to be build up for it. Cregan doesn’t do anything to her to avoid another war breaking out.

Targaryens are supposed to be otherworldly, if we got them through an outsider’s perspective it would make much more sense. Alicent seeing Rhaenyra flying on her dragon and seeing how insane this was, and how Rhaenyra saying that Alicent should ride with her would be a great set up.

Seeing how Targaryens only care about their own, no matter what they say is also a good way of seeing it through Alicent’s eyes.

Aegon, well…he should’ve been the focus of the narrative as soon as Rhaenyra leaves for Dragonstone. How does he feel about Rhaenyra? How does he feel about the fact that he was disinherited for no good reason? Those are the questions the show should be answering.

They have the skeleton of a story, finish the building, don’t knock it down and start from scratch because it never works.

Oh, and I would like Sophie Turner to star in the same project with Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen in HotD) and again with Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and Kit Harington. It's just like a dream for me, I hope at least something will come true🤗

Oh well ! So many big names. All of them in the same project ? I don't think it's what you meant, but I ask all the same.

I've always wanted to see Tom Hiddleston and Sophie starring in the same project. He's one of my favourite actors, and the reason I started watching Avengers & Thor.

I like Benedict Cumberbatch. Sherlock is probably my favourite show. (Did I say I really like british actors ?) Maybe as a mentor figure. I don't know why, for me, he would work in this archetype. And since there is an age gap between the two, I could see it.

Ewan Mitchell, you know what ? When, I first saw him as Aemond, I had no idea I knew him. And after knowing he was in the last kingdom, I decided I've seen enough of him to know he was very talented. I can totally understand why people would want to see him in a project with Sophie. He's quite intense in his acting.

Michael Fassbender has been for a long time one of my favourite actors. I still like him a lot and he's extremely talented. But weirdly, I'm not sure I want him in another project with Sophie. I wouldn't be against it, everything he does, it's good and I believe he has alchemy with everyone from what I see. From the x-men, I totally would love James McAvoy to be in a new project with Sophie. I liked the relationship between Charles & Jean, and I didn't see enough of the teacher/student (well father & daughter even) trope from Sophie and him. I'd like to see them in another project in which they have a similar relationship.

Hugh Jackman is like... my very first celebrity crush ! I was like 7 when I saw him for the first time in Xmen. He made me like the x-men and I'd say a fan. I started the comics thanks to his interpretation. So yes, I'm interested to see them again in a project even if they share like 5 ou 10 minutes of screentime.

I know maaaany people would love to see Kit and Sophie in a project together. And from I heard and read, Kit would like it to happen. Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember reading it a few years ago. So why not ? But not as brother and sister. As friends, or colleagues after all why not ?

Oh well, this a very long answer and I'm not sorry. Your ask made me happy. I enjoyed replying to you and I hope you have other ideas to share, I'd glad to hear them.

And what about actresses ? Who would you want her to work with ?

And after much soulsearching, I think is because of Kit, I'm so sorry, but if he had bit a 10% more of a unapologetic c*nt, perhaps I would have loved him, but the trope of "everything falls into my lap, I didn't want any of this" made me bored out of my mind, and for reals anything that happened North of the wall bore me to d*ath (including the Bran storyline)

Matt Smith is a genius and 25% percent of the reason I watch in a loop the first two seasons of The Crown, don't get me wrong, (25% being Claire, 25% the events, 25% Winston Churchill)
